CPU upgrade disaster
As announced the CPU has been upgraded from E6600 to Q6600 (quad core). Unfortunately everything that could go wrong actually went wrong. The motherboard didn't accept the new CPU so it had to be replaced. The OS didn't accept the new motherboard so it had to be replaced. You get the picture. There is now a nice hole in my wall which for some reason is shaped a lot like my head.

Quick Vehicles live
A new ability, Quick Vehicles, has been introduced. It has 10 levels and allows you to make vehicles faster (there is a different boost for each vehicle type). The price structure is identical to quick foot. Also the stunt vehicles ability has been made cheaper. The order of all abilities has been changed a bit to group related abilities together.

TC04 version live with MANY improvements!
Currently the builds are evenly divided between Loaded Weapons, Loaded Artifacts and generic. I now introduced a LOT of improvements which should allow 2 new types: vehicle specialist and loaded medic. I also made it possible for everyone to do their own rebuilds from within the game. So you no longer need the forum for that, just press the rebuild button.

Total Conversion completed (2 new abilities 4 new artifacts)
The ONS RPG server is now running the TC01 version of RPG.
New abilities:
* Automatic Vehicle Ejection
* Stunt Vehicles
New artifacts:

* Poison Blast
* Repulsion
I also changed the info screens from annoying slow motion to something faster. I removed level 3 from loaded weapons (which was for invasion only anyway) so loaded weapons became a bit cheaper.

Total Conversion (TEST server will act weird for a while)
Currently we are using something that is called DruidsRPG 1.73, with a few items (e.g. reflection) from DruidsRPG 2.0. After some attempts to create separate mutators to add stuff and fix things I have decided to try a different direction. I am currently working on a total conversion based on UTRPG2004 2.2 #1 002, DruidsRPG 2.10 and OneONSRPG. As soon as Dezz finishes the new Titan version, I will look into that version as well. DruidsRPG 2.10 has bug fixes and some nice new stuff that make it very interesting I think. It has also some stuff I don't like (e.g. a class system) which I am trying to remove. I am not sure yet where this will end, but I think this is worth a shot.
The TEST server is currently running a pre-pre-beta version of what I have in mind. So please note there will be stuff missing, stuff working strangely, new stuff etc. there for a while. Once it gets finished (if it ever gets finished, this might be a wrong direction) I want to add it to the ONS RPG and VCTF RPG servers. Comment.

Live statistics AND live player info
I already made the "Statistics" and the "Hall of fame" blocks on the homepage live.
You can now also click on a players name and see their detailed info. It's not completely polished yet, but it is already quite useful. E.g. to investigate what your opponents have chosen for themselves.
Just like the "Hall of fame" it only works for players who have at least level 40. Comment.

I planned to do this right after .:DOK:. reached level 115, but got a tad distracted instead. The "Statistics" and the "Hall of fame" blocks on the homepage have now been connected to the live server. Also you can now see how close someone is to reaching their next level. Comment.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before I made a mistake and someone figured it out. Oh well :-)
In case you didn't figure it out yet, BattleMode and NumberOne are actually the same person. I preferred playing on the server without people knowing this. So it seems my attempts to keep playing on the server and running the server separated have failed :-S
I think in the next few days I will eliminate the NumberOne stuff and replace everything with BattleMode. It was way to complicated anyway. Things like buying 3 separate Unreal licences (since Dezz knows a way to determine yours while you are playing), double accounts, separate e-mail addresses, a very complicated trick to fake the whois data of the domain, etc. etc. In retrospect I should have spend all this time on something else :-)
And since I am busy sharing information now anyway. My name is Nico de Vries, 40 years old, wife, 3 kids, live in the Netherlands and everything else you want to know can be found at http://www.nicodevries.com. I am one of the owners of the company I work for (currently 17 people) and this is also how I can afford to pay for things like Nitrado.net, Gameservers.com and a dedicated server. One of my past projects has been the 200.000.000 pageview http://www.theclq.com website, some gamers might remember that one. I started The CLQ while I was playing SuperHeroes Quake, which is a little bit similar to ONS RPG.
And don't worry, this server is here to stay. And when Unreal Tournament 3 arrives we will add that as well.

New and changed abilities, ping limit, new servers
Bases on several requests the vehicle abilities have been changed. I also got a request for more quick foot.
Vehicle Regeneration now heals vehicles 1 health per second per level. But it now also does heal 2% per level past the starting health amount. So it is slower, but you get more health (up to 20% instead of up to 10%).
Vehicle Armour Bonus now increases the health of any vehicle you use by 2.5% per level.
I replaced Quick Foot with Super Quick Foot. You not get 10% per level (used to be 5%) and it goes all the way up to level 10 (100%). It also got a bit cheaper. If you bought Quick Foot before you got a refund for that.
Power Jump has been replaced by Super Power Jump. This now goes to level 10 (100%) and has become much cheaper. If you bought Power Jump before you got a refund for that.
The server has now a ping limit of 250. Players who have a higher ping (all the time) are now kicked from the server. Please note you will not be kicked if your ping rises temporarily.
At ut2004://83.98.163.85:7777 you can find a new EXPERIMENTAL server with VCTF RPG. It is experimental so you might lose your levels or I could decide to remove of change the server completely in the (near) future.
At ut2004://83.98.163.86:7777 you can find a new TEST server with ONS RPG. You get instant level 200 there so it is great to test various builds there. Beware though, the bots that live there have level 200 as well. Comment.

Fast downloads, new redirect server
Until now a public redirect server was used, unfortunately yesterday this server seems to have collapsed. This caused extremely slow downloads. I have now created my own redirect server. This one should be very fast, so from now on only your bandwidth will determine how long you have to wait. Comment.

Increased the number of slots to 32
Yesterday the server handled 24 users flawlessly. Yet the CPU stayed below 25% most of the time. I have now increased the number of slots to 32 so we can find out what its limits are.
Please note that the new server has more horsepower than the old one, but it did not magically increase the speed of light. Ping might be a little bit better because of the better connection to the Internet, but don't expect miracles there. Comment.

Moved the website, created a new forum
I moved the website to the new server now. I also installed phpBB to replace the Ning forum I used before. phpBB is new to me so there will probably be some quirks at first, but it should work much better and faster then the old forum ^^ Comment.

Working on a new, dedicated, very high speed server
In approximately 2 weeks I will replace GameServers.com with a dedicated server. I ordered a Core2Duo E6600 with a 100 Mbit Internet connection to the high-performance optical IP Transit of Fiberring. Depending on how much load this server can handle I will probably add 1 or 2 more games to it.
Everything will stay the same, maps, levels, RPG,
etc. but the address of the server will change. So please come to
ONSRPG.COM every now and then to stay up to date.

New abilities, new weapon modifiers
I have added 2 weapon modifiers (from DruidsRPG200) and 2 new abilities, 1 made by shambler and Dezz and 1 made by myself:
Vehicle Armour Bonus: Increases the health of any vehicle you use by 5% per level.

Rage: 10%
more damage per level. This weapon deals a lot of damage, but also
hurts you in the process. 10% of the damage you deal hits you as well.
Reflection: 3%

prime and shock prime & alt fire. Chance increases with level.
You
can ask for a rebuild in the forum if you want a rebuild. E.g. to
create more powerfull vehicles using the new vehicle abilities.

"Spawnkilling is NOT allowed on this server"
The experiment has been completed now. The rule as designed by Geisha works best. Although there are some advantages to allowing spawnkilling for tactical reasons, the disadvantages clearly are bigger. Especially for new players who are very important to this server.

Some changes
I
increased the stat points per level from 5 to 6. This means 20%
more xp for everyone (this includes your opponents). Spend them wisely.
In
order to reduce complaints about spamkilling and complaints about
complaining about spawnkilling I have removed the maps which seem to
cause most of the problems: ONS-HoldingTankRedux, ONS-SPAMBOX and
ONS-Stairs_Of_Doom. The ONS-SPAMBOX map has also been removed since it
is simply impossible to play for people without Ultima.
Max
damage reduction used to be 200 (100%), I first lowered it to 100
(50%), raised it again to 150 (75%) which caused some protest and I
have now reduced it to 70 (35%). Especially for new players, which we
always need, it is important that players are not to hard to kill. It
also allows lower level players to level faster by killing higher level
players. If you got more than 70 you get to respend the xp and it is
also still possible to ask for a rebuld in the forum. A tip for the damage reduction fans might be to invest the xp in vampirism.
I
also reduced the Voting Time Limit, increased the
Net Start Delay, increased the TossForce with 10% and
switched the XxxX Translocator to unlimited ammo.

More slots, less maps, all systems go
The number of slots has been increased to 20 now. Also the number of spectators can now be 4.
Some
maps have been removed. Some because of redirect problems, some because
of other problems like excessive spawnkilling (Crater) or bugs (old
Holdingtank). Also the map voting interval has been increased from 10
to 15.
In the past month several improvements have been made,
both small and big. The balance has been improved (not perfect but
better), there are more maps and there is a better server. At this
moment I think there will be no more big changes in the foreseeable

Experiment over, damage reduction
Yesterdays experiment was interesting. Even with higher TickRate and TossForce the server did not crash. They have been restored to their original values now.
After
a million requests from [SPS2]K-ribou I have decided to increase the
max damage reduction from 100 (50%) to 150 (75%). Don't worry though,
none of his other requests (lower weapon speed, some form of
anti-denial, reduced ultima, the guy has a lot of requests) will be
granted.

TickRate, TossForce
The
new server seems to run very well. Unlike the old server it doesn't
seem to crash (yet). I want to push it a little harder to see what
happens. I increased the TossForce, that seemed to break the old
server. I also increased the TickRate from 25 to 30, this should reduce
ping and lag a little bit for everyone. Please let me know in the forum if everything keeps working.

NEW #1 ONS RPG SERVER !!!

have never been sure why the test server worked better, settings,
provider, load, luck. But I decided to find out for once and for all.
It took a LOT of work to get everything configured, but the NEW #1 ONS
RPG server is now at: ut2004://213.19.131.158:7777. Please let me know in the forum
if everything is ok and if the new server is an improvement or not. If
it is an improvement, this change will be permanent. Don't forget to
add the new server to your favorites.

ONS PLUS problems?
According
to Nitrado, it seems ONS PLUS somehow caused a crash beyond repair on
the server. This resulted in a restore which also caused some loss of
experience data. I am still trying to figure this out since a lot of
other servers are running ONS PLUS without any problems.

ONS PLUS, 3rd person view, advanced auto restart
ONS PLUS has been installed (thanx Dezz for the tip).
By request, 3rd person view (F4) has been enabled.
I
created a monitor which actively checks if the server is running and
does a restart if it is not. This should reduce downtime. I am not sure
yet if the crashes are caused by server load or by attacks (as
suggested by Dezz). I hope this will become more clear in the near
future.

Less deadlock, more action
ONS RPG sometimes tends to deadlock. Everyone gets stuck fighting for one node until overtime runs out. I changed the link setup on Airmars (thanx Dezz for the tip on how to do that) and, as an experiment, reduced the timelimit from 20 to 10. Please give your opinion on this in the forum.

Server down, server up again
The
server is down and refuses to come up. I already filed a complaint with
the provider but I do not know how long will take them to get it
working again.
In the meantime I copied the UT2004RPG database
to the test server so you should be able to play there in the meantime,
with your build completely intact.
Somehow the server started working again during the night.

Partial level reset, more balance
To get a more balanced game the following changes have been implemented:
* Al levels above 100 have been reduced by 90%
* Getting levels over 100 has become MUCH harder
* Max health has been reduced to 250
* Max damage reduction has been reduced to 50%
* The spree bonus has been greatly reduced
To compensate 100+ players for their reduction they all get to completely reconfigure their build.

To reduce lag (caused by adding more slots) I reduced the "tickrate" from 35 to 20 (thanx Dezz for the tip) and I reduced the max weaponspeed from 150 to 100 (250% to 200%). Everyone who bought high weaponspeed got back their points so they can spend them again.
I also added some new maps (thanx Soul for the tips). Have much fun with those!

new custom version of UT2004RPG hase been implemented which greatly
reduces the spree bonus. No more killing a friend at night to gain huge
amounts of levels.

Server transfer completed
The transfer of the server to me has been completed now. The name has been changed to #1 ONS RPG server. The next few days I will have to figure out all the details. One of those being how to reduce lag now that the number of slots has been increased. But, most important, the server is alive and kicking.

Custom version of UT2004RPG, tested bunch of maps

everything I didn't want to know about "ucc conform" today. But I
managed to create a custom version of UT2004RPG which has a reduced
spree bonus. The custom version is active on the test server.

Backup, test server, provider, onsrpg.com
A complete backup has been made of the current server. So if anything goes wrong in the next few days nothing will get lost.
I also got a 10 slot server at GameServers.com for testing purposes. It's public so everyone can play there.
I
got an invoice from Nitrado (after some reminders to them) and
transfered the money, so everything is ready to go for the server
transfer Monday March 5. The IP will stay the same and the number of
slots will become 20.
Also the domain registration has been
completed. The site can now be reached at onsrpg.com (easier to
remember and to type in the browser).

Worked everything out with the provider
Also,
the server will get 20 slots instead of 14. I have discussed this with
Xan/Dezz in the Reapers Bane forum and perhaps some small changes will
be needed to make sure everything keeps working with the extra slots.
E.g. reducing the number of spidermines. Time will tell. Monday March 5
the provider should complete the transition. After that I can change
the name of the server, make a reference to this website, etc.

Gathering information, preparing for transition
At request of Geisha, the server will be renamed. I have decided the new
name will become "#1 ONS RPG SERVER". Next Tuesday I will discuss all
details with the provider. I added a message to the Reapers Bane forum
announcing that the server will stay alive. Most of the day I have been
busy building a test server to better understand the inner workings of
a UT2004 dedicated server and especially ONS RPG.

Working on keeping the Geisha's sushi club server alive
I
have contacted the provider and they have contacted Geisha (I didn't
succeed in contacting Geisha directly). It seems I will be able to take
over the server so it will remain working after February 28th 2007. It
is a popular server and a lot of fun so keeping it alive would be great
I think.
